Tara joined the College in June 2002 working in the Human Resources department until her appointment as Clerk to the Governing Body in 2014. The role combines her 12 years of experience within FE and operating within the legislation of employment law, a good grounding for Governance. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her young family, amateur dramatics, DJing and is a semi-professional singer.

Chair of the Governing Body
Patrick has worked with the College for some 20 years. Firstly as an employer at P & O Ferries with over 2000 Dover-based staff undertaking both workplace learning and college based tuition in numerous aspects of the Catering and Hospitality industry from Level 1 to Level 4 qualifications.
Apart from seven and half years in which he served in HM Royal Marines, he has spent his working life in the Hospitality industry. On leaving the Royal Marines in 1968, he managed a chain of eight Hotels in Kent and Sussex. In 1981, he joined Townsend Car Ferries in Dover as Assistant Catering Superintendent.
For the next 24 years, he played a major role in the development of the on-board customer experience.
He was promoted to Hotel Services Director in 1994 and following mergers and acquisitions further promoted to Onboard Services Director in 1998 taking commercial responsibilities for not only vessels based in Dover, but those travelling to Spain, Holland, Northern Ireland and Western France.
He has been a Governor since 2005 when he retired as Commercial Director, On Board Services at P & O Ferries.
Beverley Aitken FCA is a retired Chartered Accountant, previously practising as a tax partner in a Maidstone firm. She lives locally and both she and her daughter have been students at the college – at different times of course.
Since retirement Beverley has become a very active Rotarian both at club and district levels and also is now a trustee of the Michael Yoakley Charity in Margate which runs the almhouses and a care home next to the QEQM hospital.
In the little spare time, she has Beverley spends with her family, gardening and travelling. She is also a member of a local barbershop choir and enjoys history and archaeology.
Beverley has been involved with the college as a governor for more than 16 years, previously being Chair of the Business Committee and Vice-Chair of the Governing Body.

Tim has lived in Broadstairs for 20 years since coming to work in Sandwich 'for a few years'. He is currently European Director of Strategic Projects for the Manufacturing Division of a Global Pharmaceutical company. Previously to that he held a number of operational, technical and business roles in the company. With three school-age children, he is committed to developing the role of the College to meet the needs of both the community and business in East Kent.
Tim has a Chemistry degree from the University of Nottingham and an MBA from the Open University. Tim is also a qualified executive coach.
Dr Sarah E Kemp is a Chartered Scientist, qualified to PhD-level and specialising in food science and technology. She has held positions at multinational FMCG companies, including Unilever and Givaudan, most recently as Head of Global Sensory and Consumer Guidance at Cadbury Schweppes and Director of Sensory and Consumer Services at Reading Scientific Services Ltd, as well as running her own catering and consultancy companies.
Sarah was born and grew up in Broadstairs. After working in the US, France and elsewhere in the UK, she returned to Broadstairs with her own family. Her activities include Fellow of and examiner for the Institute of Food Science and Technology; Past Chair of the IFST Sensory Science Group; Registered Professional Sensory Scientist; setting standards through the British Standards Institute; reviewer for scientific journals; and writing scientific papers, articles and books.

Charles Buchanan is currently Chief Executive Officer of London Ashford Airport in Kent. The airport is embarking a major £25m investment programme to develop both the airport operating infrastructure and a new terminal over the coming years. He has overall responsibility for the operational management and strategic and commercial development of the airport. The airport has approximately 50 staff covering all aspects of operations and customer service.
Prior to being appointed to London Ashford Airport, Charles was CEO of Manston Airport for four years and spent more than 10 years at London City Airport, ultimately as Strategy and Communications Director. Throughout his career in airport management, he has been responsible for commercial development and infrastructure investment programmes, combined with governmental and public relations.
Charles trained originally as a civil engineer at Oxford University and joined the developing Channel Tunnel Group in 1985. He was part of the team that submitted the successful bid to build and operate Eurotunnel and latterly was responsible for sales and marketing, both in the UK and on the Continent, through the opening in 1994 and the first years of operation, leaving as Group Sales Manager.
Ms Stephanie Martin
Originally from Manchester, Stephanie studied in Sheffield and Nottingham and after qualification taught Biology in the independent sector for 3 years. She then set up and ran a small business for the next 16 years, alongside caring for her 2 children and relocating four times as her husband pursued his career.
Stephanie and her husband moved to Thanet in 2003 and with her daughters away at university became a Home-Start Thanet Volunteer and later a Trustee, retiring from the scheme after 8 years. This experience provided a great opportunity to get to know Thanet and meet some amazing people. It was a major factor in her decision to join the governing body and accept additional responsibility as governor for safeguarding.
Jonathan was born and educated in Thanet and has lived in East Kent since 1966. Jonathan is currently the Managing Director of Morgan Jones Recruitment Consultants that he started with his wife over 15 years ago delivering recruitment and HR services to businesses throughout the UK. Jonathan has the first-hand experience of understanding the challenges that businesses face in recruiting both skilled and qualified people. He is, therefore, passionate about having a first rate college that delivers both opportunity for college students and one that exceeds business expectations.
In addition, to supporting the college, Jonathan also plays an active role with the Thanet Business Forum and Thanet Business Network. He also dedicates some of his time assisting disadvantaged young people in identifying their talents and making the most of their abilities through the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.
A keen sportsman he enjoys running, playing golf, rugby and spending time with his family.

In April 2010, Graham Razey was appointed as Principal and Chief Executive of Thanet College.
Graham Razey has also served on the education board of the Institute of Financial Services as the Further Education representative and as a school governor.
He is a keen sportsman and still plays cricket in the Kent League for Offham CC. A full profile is available through the College Executive Team page.
After completing a degree in History, Patrick taught in secondary schools and adult education for 10 years, as a teacher, head of department and director of Sixth Form.
He entered educational administration with Kent County Council, first as Assistant Divisional Education Officer in Gillingham, before moving to County Hall as Assistant County Education Officer with responsibility initially for Adult Education and In-service Training and then for colleges, as well as being Hon. Secretary of the Kent Music School for 10 years.
In 1989-90, on behalf of the Department of Education and Science, he undertook a review of the funding and delivery of Youth Worker training in England.
From 1990-97, he was Assistant Director of Education and later Head of Strategic Planning for Education with the London Borough of Bromley, before taking up a post at Mid Kent College of HFE with responsibility for teacher training programmes. During this period, he studied part-time for the degree of Doctor of Education at the UCL Institute of Education. From 2003-08 Patrick worked part-time at the Institute as a PGCE (Post-Compulsory) coordinator, and latterly for two years as Course Director for the part-time PGCE (Post Compulsory).
Tom joined Woolworths PLC in 1973 as a Management Trainee and stayed with the Company for twenty-nine years enjoying a successful and rewarding career, flourishing in the competitive Retail environment and appreciating the opportunity to work in a variety of interesting locations across the UK.
After a number of roles including managing his own company and Operations Director for the Compass Group he relocated back to Thanet and joined Land Securities as the General Manager of Westwood Cross Shopping and Leisure Centre. He enjoyed six very successful years at the Centre, managing the expansion of the site and being very active within the local community, a part of the job that he particularly enjoyed and he joined the Governing Body last year.
Tom lives with his partner, Joanne, in Broadstairs and his hobbies include golf, football, travelling, skiing and reading. He also enjoys walking his dog, Stan.
Gail has lived in Sandwich for 23 years, moving there from Scotland, South Africa, and various other places in England, and it's where she and her family feel is home. A management accountant, Gail is FCCA qualified and holds an MBA. Gail recently returned to working for Pfizer after a 3-year break in a 15-year career with the company. Gail worked for Smiths Medical International for the intervening 3 years.
Gail served a 10-year term as a Governor at Sandwich Junior School and brings that experience to her role as a governor at the College. She was excited to join the governing body and is enjoying the opportunity to learn about Further Education and the role it plays in supporting the local community and economy. Gail also volunteers with the Girl Guides, helping to run the 2nd Sandwich Rainbows Group.
Miranda has enjoyed a vibrant career in the Marketing industry, having worked at a senior management level for News International and Kent Messenger Group, and is the Managing Director of Pillory Barn creative agency.
Miranda specialises in business strategy and gained a distinction with the Open University in Developing Entrepreneurial Opportunities. Over the past 10 years, she has been responsible for projects for companies and organisations such as Skanska, Ashford Ring Road, Channel Corridor Partnership, Golding Homes, Eurotunnel Le Shuttle and Discovery Park.Her work with Discovery Park has enabled her to establish strong links with UKTI, Locate in Kent, and DCLG.
Co-opted Governor on Audit Committee
Tracey Pearcy is a partner of a local accountancy firm and joined the Board of Governors in January.
Tracey joined Levick’s as a trainee in 1988 and studied alongside work experience. Specialising in auditing, she received her practicing certificate two years after gaining membership of the Association of Chartered Accountants in 1995.
A former Dane Valley Grammar pupil, she is passionate about students realising their potential and has lectured part-time at East Kent College. The evening course helped students to pass the final level of their Association of Accounting Technicians examinations.
Jill Leigh is the Director of Christchurch Nursery in Folkestone and joined the Board of Governors in December.
After studying her childcare qualifications at East Kent College in the 1980s early ‘90s she started her own nursery business whilst also completing a degree in Early Years Education at Canterbury Christchurch University.
A dedicated professional she was short-listed in the Nursery Managers Today magazine, NMT, awards for Trainer of the Year’ in response to the business’s commitment to its excellent apprenticeship scheme.
Jill sat on the Board of Directors for the Kent Channel Chamber of Commerce in Folkestone for 8 years holding the post of Vice Chair for the final 2.
Other accolades include an Investors in People Award in 2005 and, a year later, first place at the South East of England Award Scheme.
Staff Governor (Curriculum)
Joanne joined the College in September 2013 as a Programme Area Manager for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy until her recent appointment as Senior Innovator. Joanne is extremely passionate about skills competitions and sits on the national committee for Worldskills. Joanne recently represented East Kent College in South Africa as part of an initiative to share good practice for skills and training globally. Joanne has 12 years’ experience in the FE sector, she is a published beauty writer and owns her own cosmetics brand. She was awarded young entrepreneur of the year when she was 19 by the Princes Youth Business Trust for setting up her own successful salon and has worked on many celebrity clients including Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and Rylan Clarke.
Staff Governor (Support)
Jo has been involved in education for most of her working life, having worked at Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate for 17 years prior to starting her post as Team Leader of Support Services in Dover last August. She is very passionate about this area of Kent having lived in Thanet all of her life. While in post at the Marlowe Academy, Joanna was a regional winner of The Teaching Award for Pastoral Support of Students. Joanna also captained the Thanet Wanders Women’s rugby team for many years and escorted a group of students climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for a charity during 2010. Jo attended the Clarendon House school in Ramsgate and currently lives in Broadstairs right next to the College' campus with her husband of 24 years and her two grown-up children. Jo is looking forward to being more involved in the expansion and success of East Kent College in her role as Staff Governor.
